Tulsa Cosmetic DentistDramatic Makeovers in Tulsa Restorative-Reconstructive Dentistry
Cosmetic Dentistry, in general terms, is primarily an area of focus within general dentistry that is practiced by most dentists in varying degrees.... degrees of intensity and commitment. Cosmetic procedures usually refer to the "restoration" of cosmetic qualities such as teeth whitening, white fillings, crowns and even bridgework.Makeover dentistry requires a skill set that goes beyond "common" cosmetic dentistry. While most of these special skills can be acquired through formal training... there is clearly one attribute that cannot be learned per se... but rather developed. An element that is ever present and seems to flourish with challenge. This quality is called creativity .... having an artistic perspective. Our young lady here in the adjacent photo underwent makeover dentistry. Significant cosmetic dentistry that required the skilled use of cosmetic procedures...plus the artful application of certain reconstructive procedures that culminated in a true makeover experience, as defined by the patient. Cosmetic Makeovers - DefinedA true makeover is considered to be a dramatic event. Our patient desired a certain cosmetic goal that would provide the appearance she longed for... along with tooth function she never really had.
Yes, this is the same young lady in the adjacent photo. In addition to the poor dentition, it can be seen that there doesn't seem to be much support for her upper and lower lips (inadequate vertical dimension). Her jaw and chin are somewhat over-prominent features. Features that our patient didn't particularly care for.Overcoming Genetics in DentistryAt the time she presented herself in our office, our patient reported a history of congential defects in her dentition that produced a combination of adult and baby teeth. This was treated initially by other dentists who implemented combinations of metal dentures and partials. The patient felt they were ugly (cosmetic), constantly loose, routinely trapped food and prevented her from biting and chewing food well... she was limited to eating soft foods only. The unusually small teeth did not support her "bite", causing her mouth to over-close. As can be seen in the photo the bite caused her to have the cosmetic appearance of a much older woman.
She was once chosen to be a Queen in a parade event. While smiling and waving at the audience she overheard someone say "Look! That princess has no teeth!." Our young patient finished the parade smiling... but without showing her teeth. We understood the patient's goals of having a smile that not only looked great but gave her the tooth function she had only been able to wish for. Dr. Letcher and our laboratory staff developed custom plaster and wax models of her entire mouth. Cosmetic - Technical Smile DesignAfter "designing" the smile (patient selected size and shape of teeth) she wanted, Dr. Letcher determined what combinations of implants and crowns would alter the structure of her mouth to produce the cosmetic goal she was seeking... a smile that fit her face.
Temporary crowns were crafted for the implants and her remaining teeth that were continuously altered until the "fit, feel and appearance" were precise and met the tooth function and cosmetic goals of the patient. The final dramatic step was creating the final porcelain components, based on the extensive modeling made possible by having our own dental lab, resulting in a cosmetic result that was very appealing and quite dramatic. As can be seen in this after-photo, the new crowns provided new vertical support and caused proportional shifts in her jaw line. As final testimony to the impact of this cosmetic makeover result, our young patient changed careers... leaving a job where public interaction was perhaps minimal... to that of being a professional model.
